About This Workshop
In this 6-week workshop, we’ll conceptually explore the big ideas around building and extending number knowledge from 3rd grade through 5th grade. We’ll unpack the progression of learning as you build an understanding around the major concepts we tackle with our students including:
Module 1: Whole Number and Place Value
Module 2: Building Fluency through 1000 with Addition and Subtraction
Module 3: Building Fluency through 100 with Multiplication and Division
Module 4: Building Fluency through 1000 with Multiplication and Division
Module 5: Extending Place Value and Operations with Decimals
Module 6: Number and Statistical Reasoning
Each module will feature 3 main components:
- Launch the Concept: We’ll work through a 3-act task. We’ll also anticipate and analyze student work samples within the progression of learning. The analysis of student work will set up the learning that is about to take place.
- Connecting & Extending our Thinking: We’ll engage in meaningful tasks supported by an instructional video that models how I would teach the lesson. Through modeling the task, teachers will understand how to harness these tasks and activities to move students through the progression of learning.
- Building Fluency: Once a conceptual understanding is developed, it’s critical that students build fluency. It is here where we’ll engage in meaningful practice that supports the understanding that was constructed earlier in the module.
