About This Workshop
If you're a middle or high school teacher who wants your students to better understand patterns and functions but you don’t know how to facilitate them, then this is the mini-workshop for you. You'll learn how to use visual patterns to help your students describe functions using numbers, pictures, symbols, and words.
We'll begin by talking about why we need visual patterns. Then we'll explore both linear and quadratic patterns so you can see how students will experience them and how we facilitate them. We'll also talk about what happens when kids get stuck and how to use visual patterns when teaching online. Finally, we'll wrap it up with how to merge this with what you're already doing.
About the Instructor
Fawn Nguyen
Fawn is a first-year Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) with Rio School District in Oxnard, California. She was a middle school teacher for 30 years prior. Fawn was the 2014 Ventura County Teacher of the Year. In 2009, she was awarded the Math Teacher Hero from Raytheon. In 2005, she was awarded the Sarah D. Barder Fellowship from the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth.

Fawn has been a keynote speaker and workshop facilitator at math conferences throughout the country. She is also part of the UC-Santa Barbara Mathematics Project leadership team since 2005.
In 2012, she co-founded the Math Teachers' Circle in Thousand Oaks, California. Fawn served a three-year term as a committee member of NCTM's Professional Development Services Committee (PDSC) during 2015-2018.
